The goals of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission are to address the Commission charge as developed by the Planning Committee and to provide a set of recommendations about the future of continuing board certification for consideration by ABMS. As part of its work, the Planning Committee developed a charge for the Commission that encompasses a framework and set of key questions about board certification.
The Commission will review published literature and reports, elicit testimony, convene meetings, and conduct primary data collection as its budget permits. It will engage and gather the perspectives of those involved and affected by physician certification, including practicing physicians; advocates for patients and the public; state medical societies; specialty association and societies; accreditors; credentialing organizations; healthcare delivery systems; experts in assessment, learning and quality improvement; certifying boards; and other professional organizations.
In addition, portions of the Commission meetings will be open to guests; guests will be able to hear testimony, presentations and discussions. The Commission will also meet in closed session.
The Commission is expected to release a draft report for public comment in November 2018, and a final report will be sent to ABMS in February 2019.
