The goals of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission were to address the Commission charge as developed by the Planning Committee and to provide a set of recommendations about the future of continuing board certification for consideration by ABMS. As part of its work, the Planning Committee developed a charge for the Commission that encompasses a framework and set of key questions about board certification.

The Commission reviewed published literature and reports, elicited testimony, convened meetings, and conducted primary data collection as its budget permits. It engaged and gathered the perspectives of those involved in and affected by physician certification, including practicing physicians; advocates for patients and the public; state medical societies; specialty associations and societies; accreditors; credentialing organizations; healthcare delivery systems; experts in assessment, learning and quality improvement; certifying boards; and other professional organizations.

In addition, portions of the Commission meetings were open to guests, and guests were able to hear testimony, presentations and discussions. The Commission also met in closed session.

The Commission released a draft report for public comment in November 2018, and submitted a final report to the Board of Directors of ABMS on February 12, 2019.
